Werner Anders 9 Kelson AveN' Grimsby ON L3M 4C6 Kanada To Whom It May Concern: Why is it that our society frowns upon uniqueness? If something hasn’t been done before, does that mean that I can’t be the first to do it? I’d like to share a story of how daring to be different can be a very rewarding experience. In 2000, I purchased some black dress boots for my son’s wedding. At that time, the store had a promotion where a second purchase would be half off the regular price. I splurged and bought a pair of grey dress boots as well. I commented that someday I would wear one grey boot and one black boot at the same time; to which my wife and the saleslady laughed. They were laughing because no one does that. No one wears two shoes from different pairs. No one does it because it would be a silly thing to do. Little did they know, their reactions started the wheels turning in my mind and I was not going to be discouraged. I decided that not only would I wear mismatching shoes, I should also create an entire outfit. The boots were the starting point from which I ventured in to the world of fashion design. I designed pants and had them tailor-made with one black leg and one grey leg. The tailor originally responded to my order with skepticism; he had never been asked to do that before, but I reminded him that there’s a first time for everything. Not only did I have the tailor make the pants for my outfit, but I also requested a matching vest, half black/half grey. To add some spice, I decided to flip the colours to produce an even more drastic effect. In completing my masterpiece I had a silk tie made in co-ordination with the rest of the ensemble. With my suit in tip-top condition, I ventured in to the public. I’ve walked through malls and I’ve gone to dinner parties. Initially, people just stare, but then they ask questions. Everyone wants to know where I got my outfit; someone even thought that perhaps I had had it imported from Italy. People seem to be excited to see something new, to see something unique. Many comment that maybe I’ve started a trend. I don’t think of myself as a trendsetter. I’m just a regular guy who dared to be different. In the end, I’m giving people something to talk about. I’ve received a lot of compliments and more than anything I feel great that I didn’t abandon my idea for the fear of doing something for the first time. I wonder about the great creations that will never be realized because they’re different, unique and someone would have to be the first to do it. I’ve enclosed some pictures for your reference.
